Auto Transmission Repair

By Rhonda Lassiter

Make sure that your car's transmission always works efficiently. Transmission repair is undeniably costly. In fact, you'll cringe at the amount you'll have to shell out in case you run into several problems. With today's increasing prices, it's best that you look for ways to save money.

Spare yourself from trouble simply by knowing how to maintain your car's transmission. It won't take much of time, and more importantly, you'll be assured of your safety whenever you go out. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere can be scary. This is the last thing you want to happen. And if you have to leave your car on the road simply because it refuses to run, then you need to find ways to make sure no one steals it.

If you are like most consumers, the thought of those costs makes you want to cringe and run the other way! To save money you may wish to purchase a used or remanufactured transmission instead of a brand new one, and then find a shop that will put it in for a fraction of the cost of most shops. For some individuals however, this is not possible and they instead must head to the local transmission repair shop in their community to get their automobile fixed.

The amount of money you will be charged to have the transmission on your car or truck repaired depends on several factors. The most important consideration is the kind of repairs it requires and the extent to which they need to be done. In other words, the worse the damage, the more you will pay. A few minor repairs and changing the fluid will cost you in the hundreds, while a complete replacement, when you consider the parts and labor, will cost you into the thousands.

The mechanics at the transmission repair shop will consider the make and model of vehicle that you drive. Cars that are domestic and standard models manufactured in the United States will cost less to fix than will imported vehicles such as Volkswagen, or high-end vehicles, such as BMW or Mercedes.

Tip 3: Stop the Car when Changing Gears Don't change from drive to reverse while the vehicle runs. Or, always change from park to drive once you've made sure that the engine is idle. This allows you to put less stress on the transmission.

If your car is vintage or is very rare, finding parts to replace, repair or rebuild the transmission could be difficult. In this case, the cost to fix this kind of car will increase.

Before you head into a transmission repair facility, you need to know that vehicles that have automatic transmissions cost more to fix than manual transmissions. It helps to be aware of this right from the very beginning.
