Steps On How An Aftermarket Exhaust Is Installed To A Dodge 6.7 Cummins L Engine

By Cynthia Allen

Cummins L series engines are straight 6 diesel engines which are produced and are designed by Cummins. These engine types can displace 10 liters. The production has started in the year 1982 and was named L10. This L10 engine was being based on a predecessor with 8.3 liters and is used into many different applications. This can displace 10 liters and is made available in different forms.

The forms may include upright, for use in buses and in trucks, horizontal, for use in the under floor of trains and buses, and vertical. L10 is considered to be the very first type that is offered by Cummins as competitive in a bus market. The reason for this is because its earlier productions are very heavy and large. Also, this became a troublesome introduction to a market that have problems in sealing and high oil consumption. Here are the steps on the installation of aftermarket exhausts into the dodge 6.7 Cummins L engine.

Be sure to let the engine be cooled first before you are going to touch it. This must be cooled first so you will be protected from any harm because of the engines high temperature. If you touch it, you may provide a pair of gloves or even just any types of cloth for the heat to be lessened. After cooling, start to remove its passenger side fender. Make sure to remove it well so you can have an easy access to V band clamp.

The V band clamp can be found in the exhausts housing of a turbo. V band clamps are the connections to a downpipe. After the removal of fender, cut off the downpipe using either sawzall or hacksaw. This must be done first before a cross member is cut. With this, you can just easily get that downpipe our from truck.

Begin to loosen the clamps from the exhausts. There are hangers being attached into a vehicle frame, so remove these hangers. Remove as well as the factory exhaust along with the instructions. A factory spare tire heat guard is located in a tailpipe section of an exhaust. Cut if off then remove it. An aftermarket will be accommodated with a bigger size after removing it.

Begin the process of installing the new and the improved aftermarket exhaust. Start on attaching the previously taken factory V band to the downpipe. Then add several pieces of straight exhaust pipes until having to reach the muffler into the proper placement. Aftermarket kits usually are being offered along with pipe pieces having labels of 1, 2, 3, etc.

Hanging the muffler. A muffler must be allowing the exhaust pipe on sliding inside it in either directions. This step may sometimes be difficult, so a pair of pliers is suggested for use when stretching the muffler ends. It is also recommended for you to look for a partner when hanging the muffler.

Hanging over a tailpipe section and an axle pipe. Be sure to hang well all hangers. Using a penetrating oil is recommended so that the hangers will just easily slide to rubber brushings.

And the last process is reinstalling the passenger side fender. Reinstalling it well is very important. To crank up the truck. Make sure to avoid any rattling sounds by checking the exhaust if it is not loosened. After all processes, test all the operations.
