QoS IP Phone Systems Essential Details

By David Patterson

IP phones uses voice over internet protocol technologies for transmitting and placing phone calls on the IP network instead of the public switched telephone network or PSTN. Common functions and features include caller ID, call transfer, hold and conference. Though this technology has issues like it requires internet access and is dependent on the mains electricity.

Another issue it has is the voice quality suffers whenever other applications are using and accessing the network that the call is also using and accessing. QoS IP phone systems are essential in managing data traffic because of this reason. Quality of service or QoS is the concepts and techniques collection in providing optimal call quality.

This is a service that arranges particular traffic by slowing data packets down with lesser importance for the important one to arrive at their destination faster. Routers usually use a First In, First Out or FIFO method when sending data but it can be changed with QOS tagging. Changing it would give priority to certain traffic and move them up the queue.

Queues are holding containers of packets of data for network devices if they cannot be sent immediately and with low priority. These tags are being prioritized using different methods with different levels dependent upon the router. Some examples of the levels are low, medium or high. Tagging could be done by the use of Ethernet ports of routers.

That router used for implementing QoS must be placed inside the LAN as the gateway device after the cable and DSL modem. The experience in having choppy voices while on a conversation, which happens when other applications grab the needed bandwidth, could be reduced by this. These applications are other high bandwidth ones like email and gaming.

This will not affect the performance of your ISP because they are already limiting your speed in downloading and uploading related on the degree of service you acquired. You should know these limitations and do a speed test measurement then compare it what the ISP has told you. If you do not receive at least eighty percent of the limit cap then troubleshoot this issue with their tech support.

Before putting a QOS settings in the router, do these steps first if you experience having choppy voices. Try talking using your IP phone without other contending computers or phones and check if the issue is still there. Check every computer on LAN are clear of any spyware by checking them with a protection software.

Individually put the settings and check them each time if the desired result are achieved and they are working. Put the simpler settings first then individually add the other settings based on how advanced each one are after the checking is done. Experiment and determine the setting that best achieve the desired results.

Your networking equipment can also affect the voice quality and is critical in have a good phone conversation. This is not a big problem in companies that have fewer employees because the active users are fewer and lesser simultaneous use of network. While in bigger companies with more employees will have many active users specially if on a computer that are transmitting all kinds of data simultaneously.
