Mexican Semi-Truck Found With 513 People

By Cornelius Nunev

Two semi-trucks were stumbled across carrying five hundred and thirteen people in the cargo holds in Mexico, and the trucks were trying to get the illegal immigrants to America. Individuals were found with x-ray scanning equipment to be crammed to the back of the trailers like sardines in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Close to Guatemalan border where human smuggling happened

Mexican authorities busted a small human smuggling operation near the border of Mexico and Guatemala, in the state of Chiapas. There were checkpoints near Tuxtla Gutierrez that two semi-trucks were driving through. With x-ray equipment, states MSNBC, they stumbled across hundreds of individuals in the trucks. Between the two trucks there were five hundred and thirteen people who were hungry, dehydrated and holding on for dear life to the cargo ropes that had been strung between the walls for them to keep themselves upright.

Immigrants not all from the same place

There was surely a variety of people in the truck. There were several individuals from different countries involved. Most of the people were from Guatemala; however, some were not. There were 6 from Nepal, one from japan, 1 from china, 12 from India, 47 from El Salvador and 32 that had come from Ecuador. Most were male, but there were 32 females and four children. The Mexican cops are responsible for the humans being transferred while four smugglers tried to escape and were arrested, CNN states. The smugglers wanted $7,000 per person, according to the Chiapas general, and only had air holes drilled to the top of the trailer. In Puebla, the trucks were to be re-routed. This would have gotten the individuals in the U.S., in theory. In January, a truck containing 219 migrants was discovered in the same region.

Using Mexico to get to the United States

Mexico is where many immigrants travel. This is where they go first if they want to the United States at some time. According to Mexican authorities, a find like this hasn't occurred in a long time. BBC states that it was a pretty large find. Illegal immigrants often have to enlist the help of human smugglers, known as coyotes or coyotaje, who get them across the United States edge for a fee. Migrants have little recourse in the event of injury and could be subject to abuse. There were 10,000 migrants kidnapped between April and Sept last year, reports the Christian Science Monitor. There were also 72 migrants killed by the Zetas narcotic cartel in just August of last year.
